How does search engines work on many sites?

I saw one of the SEO topics in Digitalpoint forums on how search engines work? The thread starter was right about it, because before we do the SEO, we must learn first the architecture of search engines. Search engines like Yahoo, Google and Bing have the following components:

* Indexer - it analyzes various elements of the page like text, headers, etc.
* Spider - this program downloads web pages just like a web browser we use right now.
* Crawler - this program focuses on finding links in a page.
* Result Engine - this term focuses on ranking pages
* Database - this is simply know as the storage data.
* Web Server - it contains an HTML page with an input field for search queries.

I hope you have learned something from these components.
